Biographical Dictionary of Professors of Universities of the Second Polish Republic
CO-FUNDED WITH STATE FUNDS
PROGRAM: „National Programme for the Development of the Humanities”
Task name: „Biographical Dictionary of Professors of Universities of the Second Republic”
Co-funding: PLN 372 000
Total project value: PLN 372 000
Task description:
The main objective of the project is to prepare a Dictionary which will contain extensive biographical entries, prepared mainly on the basis of source materials, of professors employed at Polish universities during the inter-war period. In the six such universities (Warsaw University, Jagiellonian University, Poznan University, Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov, Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, and Catholic University of Lublin), more than 900 people were employed as Professors during the discussed period.
Some of the professors are well-known figures and information concerning them is strongly present in Polish historiography, however, numerous representatives of the group we are interested in are people about whom knowledge is scarce, and sometimes they are completely unknown. Implementing the project will not only make it possible to make findings concerning people who are not well known, it will also make it possible to verify the knowledge we already have concerning the more recognisable people. The data included in the Dictionary will constitute a powerful base of information allowing further professional research on academic personnel in the Second Republic, as well as on a narrower scale, on the history of individual universities. The dictionary will also serve as an important element for research on the Polish intelligentsia during the interwar period.
