Gamers, heroines, and heroes - representations of women and men in games, i.e. the Athena project at a video games conference
On 20 April 2023, the JKU Institute of Media, Journalism, and Social Communication hosted the 4th edition of the national scientific conference „Video games. Media, communication, entertainment”. The event brought together researchers from all over Poland, including Kraków, Łódź, Warsaw, and Opole. It also constituted an opportunity to present the Athena project. Weronika Salek and Natalia Walkowiak from the IMDiKS, members of the Athena team, presented their paper entitled „Gamers, heroines, and heroes - representations of women and men in games”. Talking about the assumptions of the project, the main purpose of which is to analyse and develop new solutions in terms of developing the research potential of the European Union's scientific institutions on the basis of a balanced policy towards gender equality in science, they drew attention to the broad issue of gender equality, including that in games.
