Prof. Marek Ruszkowski was born on 21 April 1960 in Radom. There, in 1979, he graduated at IV Tytus Chałubiński Secondary School. In 1979-1983 he studied Polish philology at Higher School of Pedagogy in Kielce. He obtained his doctorate in 1990 at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin on the basis of a thesis entitled Syntax of Witold Gombrowicz's prose. He obtained the degree of habilitated doctor in 1998 (habilitation colloquium in 1997) at the Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow on the basis of his dissertation Main syntactic tendencies in Polish artistic prose of the interwar period. He was awarded the title of professor of humanities by the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland on 31 January 2008.

In 1983 he started working at the Higher School of Pedagogy in Kielce (now Jan Kochanowski University). From 1990 to 1993 he was the dwputy dean of the Faculty of Humanities, in 1996-1999 deputy director of the Institute of Polish Philology, and in 2002-2005 director of this institute.

To date, he has published more than 210 works, including 11 books. Four volumes of collective works have been published under his editorship. As a publishing reviewer, he has reviewed 76 books (monographs, dictionaries, collective works, post-conference volumes, school and academic textbooks). His research interests are mainly in Polish grammar, stylistics, linguistic statistics and language culture. To date, he has supervised more than 250 master degrees and three doctorates. One of them, dr Mateusz Kowalski, received the 2014 Prime Minister's Award for a distinguished dissertation defended in 2013. Professor M. Ruszkowski also reviewed 4 doctoral theses and 1 habilitation thesis.

Between 1998 and 2001 he was a member of the Board of the Polish Linguistic Society. He was a member of the the JKU Senate for three terms (1999-2008). He is deputy editor-in-chief of the international journal "Respectus Philologicus" and head of the Department of Modern and Historical Polish. He has been a school textbook appraiser for the Ministry of Education since 2002.

He has been awarded the Medal of the National Education Committee (2002), the Silver Cross of Merit (2005) and the Gold Medal for Long Service awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland (2014). In addition, he has received 6 Rector's Awards, the University's 40th Anniversary Medal (2010) and the JKU Students' union Award Przyjaciel Studenta (Eng. Friend of the Student) (2013).
