prof. dr hab. Agnieszka Gałuszka

Prof. Agnieszka Gałuszka was born in 1975 in Kielce. She graduated from Master's degree studies in environmental protection from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Catholic University of Lublin (1999). In 2002, she obtained her doctoral degree in Earth sciences in the discipline of geology at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of Wrocław, and in 2008, her postdoctoral degree (Habilitated Doctor) at the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the same university. In July 2014, she was awarded the title of Professor of Earth Sciences by the President of Poland.

Her scientific speciality consists in environmental geochemistry, especially studying trace elements as components of pollution in various elements of the natural environment – waters, rocks, soils, and plants. She determines trace elements and stable isotopes of lead in environmental samples using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique. Her other scientific interests include green analytical chemistry, mineralogy, and petrology. In the years 2012 and 2014, she was the head of an OPUS grant, and additionally participated as a contractor in four competitively funded national projects. She has also participated in an international project in cooperation with United States Geological Survey in which research was carried out in Poland and Alaska, as well as in acid mine water research in SW Colorado. She actively cooperates with researchers from domestic units – Department of Analytical Chemistry of the Gdansk University of Technology, Mass Spectrometry Laboratory of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, and foreign ones – Prof. Michael Wagreich of the University of Vienna, Prof. Colin Waters of the University of Leicester, Prof. Neil Rose of the University College London. She is the coauthor of three academic textbooks, a thematic Polish-English/English-Polish dictionary, as well as the author and coauthor of more than a hundred scientific papers and chapters in domestic and foreign monographs. She participates or has participated in the work of numerous scientific organisations and councils, the most important of which are the Anthropocene Working Group at the International Commission of Stratigraphy, the Committee of Mineralogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Scientific Council of the Polish Geological Institute–National Research Institute, the Standing Team of Experts in Exact Technical Sciences of the National Science Centre, and the ministerial advisory team for lists of scientific journals. She systematically participates as an expert of the National Science Centre in evaluating projects in the ST10 panel. She is the Associate Editor of the JCR base journal International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology (publ. Springer).

In the years 2012-2019 she was Head of the Department of Geochemistry and Environmental Protection, and since 2019 acts as the Head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Geochemistry. In the years 2013 to 2016, she was the head of doctoral studies in the discipline of chemistry. In 2019-2020, she served the function of the Head of the Section of Exact and Natural Sciences of the JKU Doctoral School. In 2016, she became the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Research, Human Resources Development, and International Cooperation, and in the years 2018-2019 she was the Plenipotentiary of the Rector of JKU for the discipline of chemical sciences. She greatly appreciates working with students, which is demanding but constantly creates new challenges and teaches humility. She was the founder and supervisor of the „Calcite” Student Science Club (2000-2008). From 2003 to 2006, she was the coordinator of the „SOCRATES-ERASMUS” program at the Institute of Chemistry. She carried out lectures for Doctoral and Master's degree students at the University of Vienna (Austria) and Tianjin University of Technology (People's Republic of China) as visiting professor . Her non-professional interests include painting and photography. In her free time, she walks the hiking trails of the Świętokrzyskie region, reads books, and writes limericks.
